Quest for Excellence: Seeking Quality Childcare in Dublin

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

With nearly 400 childcare crèches in Dublin – offering a dizzying array of price plans, services and facilities for children – choosing the Dublin crèche that is right for you, and for your children, is a daunting task, indeed. Fortunately, there are a number of useful resources available to guide you in making your decision, providing independent, researched information to arm you in your quest for excellence in childcare in Dublin.

The Dublin City Childcare Committee

The Dublin City Childcare Committee was established in 2001 (along with 32 other City and County Childcare Committees, nationwide) under the Equal Opportunities Programme, to enhance childcare in Dublin in a variety of ways. The committee provides:

• advice for entrepreneurs seeking to set up a childcare business in Dublin

• childcare information sessions

• training courses

• support for seeking funding under the National Childcare Investment Programme (NCIP)

The committee’s stated mission is to ‘create an environment that values all children, by guiding the ongoing development of an infrastructure of high quality edu-care that supports the holistic development of children in a family and community context throughout Dublin city.’ It’s a slightly long-winded way of saying they want to help make crèches in Dublin better. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Camping And You: New Camping Equipment And More

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Your camping trip can be hazardous, incomplete, and less fun if you do not have the right kind of camping gear. So if you are a camping enthusiast, you may want to check out some of the newer developments in camping equipment available. As far as camping accessories go, they can enhance your camping experience and make it all the more exciting. If you are a new camper, you need to know exactly what kinds of camping supplies you will need before you go. Not only to ensure your safety, but also to make the trip as enjoyable as possible.

There have been dozens of new technological advancements made in recent years to improve camping equipment and even add new kinds of camping accessories you never imagined before. From items such as, camping stoves, camping lanterns, camp showers, and camping cookware, the types of camping gear that is now being manufactured is pretty amazing.

I was astonished when I found out about the latest, highest technology items that camping merchandise designers have come up with. And camping manufacturers are selling their new lines of items with much success.

The right brands, the right prices and all of the pertinent information you want to know can be found right here on our website. However, ultimately, the decision will be based on what kinds of camping equipment, accessories, and other merchandise suit your personal desires and interest you most. Take into consideration the kinds of equipment you will need based on when and where you will be camping, and have a look at the accessories too.

Of course, you will have to have things like sleeping bags and tents etc–these are the essentials for anyone camping without an RV or camper. If you want to spoil yourself while camping, be as comfortable as possible, and make things especially easy, there are great types of camping equipment and accessories available for you.

Believe it or not, there are now camping accessories such as camping showers being sold, special camping cookware, camping stoves and more. Imagine waking up in the morning while on your camping trip and just hopping into another tent for a warm morning shower–sounds impossible doesn’t it. But this new type of camping merchandise is very popular and, in our opinion, absolutely amazing.

There are, of course, people who prefer to use very little and really experience nature. However, most of us prefer to sleep with our head on a pillow instead of the hard ground. And even those who do not prefer to sleep in a tent or cabin or RV can appreciate portable stoves and grills for taking hikes and having picnics etc.

Try the very best camping equipment for you, and have a more wonderful camping experience this season than you’ve ever had before.

Tips on How to Move Or Travel With Your Cat

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Is it in the cat’s best interest to be included in the travel plans?

Many people like to take their animals with them as they travel. While cats are most comfortable in their home environment, some cats can adapt to travel rather well. Certain life situations such as relocation, an extended stay with a relative who is ill, or a serious relationship headed toward marriage or cohabitation, may require your cat travels with you on an as needed or routine basis. I discourage traveling with cats, because they are incredible athletic and it’s is extremely easy to loose your pet as you pack, travel, stop at rest areas and once you’ve reached your new destination. Most cats get very nervous traveling and may become dehydrated or ill. If you are relocating, your cat is likely to become agitated and may try to run away before or after your move. If it’s in the best interest of your pet to include them in your travel plans, or if you are relocating, the following tips may help.

Preparation.

Before you plan a trip with your cat make sure that the pet will have a safe place to stay once you reach your destination. When you stay at a hotel, even if you’ve stayed at the same hotel dozens of times, confirm each time you travel that they still accept pets. When you stay with friends, don’t assume they will love your cat as much as you do, and make sure no one has a cat allergy. Find out if they have pets and whether their pet is very friendly with all animals in their home. Many friendly dogs and cats become very aggressive when another animal is placed in their home. Most often, I discourage anyone from subjecting a cat to another animal for a short period of time. It’s traumatic to most cats and increases the likelihood your cat will run away–given any small opportunity.

Help your cat love the carrier.

Several weeks prior to your trip or move, purchase a cat carrier for each cat. It should be large enough for them to stretch, turn around and lie down. If you have more than two cats, they all get along very well, you have a long trip, and you have a vehicle like a mini-van, you may want to consider buying a dog kennel that will accommodate all your cats. Whether you’re using a cat carrier or a dog kennel, pad the bottom of the carrier with a fluffy towel, or an old sweatshirt. If the towel or sweatshirt smells like you, your cats comfort level is increased. Get the cat comfortable with the carrier a few weeks before you travel. Keep the carrier door open and feed them in or around the carrier. For example if you have two cats and two cat carriers, I suggest placing a little wet food in each carrier at meal time. Do this 3-4 times a week for a few weeks before your trip. Leave the carrier door open so the cat can leisurely walk in and out of the carrier.

Avoid injury and minimize trauma for the cat.

Never haul cats in a carrier in the back of a pick up truck exposed to wind, weather and the elements. If you’re moving and renting a moving truck, keep the cat in the carrier with you in the truck cab. Never load a cat in the back of a loaded truck or moving van. The carrier and your cat could get crushed as your belongings shift. You could kill or injure your pet.

What to do when your trip or move is in the near future.

Shortly before you begin your trip or move, locate and pack your pet’s health certificate or veterinary records. When you travel with pets the rabies vaccine must be current. Many states have additional requirements. If your pet needs any vaccinations, get these done at least two weeks prior to your trip. This gives the cat an opportunity to recover from the vaccinations, and minimizes the risk of illness. Tape the health certificates or veterinarian records to the top of each carrier. Be sure your veterinarian’s phone number is on the record as well in case you have an emergency or a law enforcement official needs to check your records. If you do not normally use a collar on your indoor pet, it would be good to do so now. Write your phone number on the collar so it can be read from a distance, and make sure it’s easy to read. It’s wonderfully, shocking how many lost cats are reunited with their guardian because their collar had a phone number.

If you are relocating, your pet is old, or your trip is more than a couple hours, purchase a small, flexible, disposable litter pan for each cat. These can be placed in the carrier (before you load the cat in the carrier) the day you travel. Your cat may lie in the litter, but it encourages your cat to use the litter pan. If your trip is less than two hours, a towel or sweatshirt in the bottom of the carrier is sufficient.

The night before your trip or relocation.

Keep cats enclosed in a familiar area, such as a bedroom or kitchen-make sure they have a litter box available. Cats seem to be amazingly psychic and like to hide the day of the trip. Put the carrier in the room and leave the carrier door open. This will make it easier to load the cat in the carrier in the morning. Feed the cat its normal meal the night before your trip, but do not over feed. You may want to try and use an herbal produce called pet remedy. I use this every time I relocate with my cats and it helps reduce their stress. At least 5-6 hours before your trip remove all food. Remove water a few hours before your trip.

On your day of travel

Make sure your vehicle is packed first and in such a way as to leave room for the carrier(s). Pack the cat(s) last. Be patient! If your cat has been easily going into the carrier with a little food try to get them to do so again. If they won’t go in, pick them up, gently place them on the floor in front the carrier with their tail or butt near the carrier’s open door-you are going to back them into the carrier. Keep one hand around the cat’s ribcage, take your other hand and with an open palm press against the cats face so they will back into the carrier. It helps to have the carrier back against a wall. Once the cat has back into the carrier, keep one hand on the cat and gentle swing the door closed as much as possible. Slide your hand out but keep an open palm as you close and lock the door. This keeps the cat from bolting out of the carrier. Make sure the carrier door is secure and load your cat in the car. Try to get this right the first time. The more often you’re unsuccessful at loading your cat in the carrier, the more difficult this procedure becomes. Feel free to practice this once or twice several weeks prior to your trip. (When practicing prior to your trip, open the cat door immediately after a successful load, and give your cat a treat or meal.)

Begin your journey.

Now that you and your cat are safely in the car you can breathe a sigh of relief. Most cats meow for up to an hour as you begin your trip. I’ve had some cats that meowed a few minutes and then settled down, and other cats who let out blood curdling cries for an hour. Sometimes it helps to cover the carrier with a dark, but breathable fabric, or you can cover ¾ of the carrier, leaving the door uncovered. Covering or partially covering a carrier helps a cat feel more secure. Make sure the cats are kept in moderate temperature at all times during your trip. Also, play soothing music as you drive, and as much as possible ignore them. The most important thing you can do now is arrive at your destination safely. If your trip is less than six hours, leave your cat in the carrier until you arrive at your destination. The only thing you need to monitor is how much the cat pants. Since cats do not perspire, they will pant when their heart beat is elevated and when they are hot. It’s normal to see some panting because a car ride is very stressful for most cats. If you see excessive panting, your cat drools or begins convulsions stop as soon as possible and call your veterinarian.

Upon arrival

Carry your cat (in the carrier) inside the new destination and place the cat in a single secured room, such as a bedroom or kitchen. If you have multiple cats, bring all the cats in first, before you open any carrier doors. Also, bring in a litter pan and water bowl. When you open the carrier door, let your cat come out by themselves. Be sure your cats have continuous access to water during as you settle into your new surroundings. It’s best to keep the cat in a single room or small area until, you are certain the cat could not get out. If the cat is an indoor/outdoor cat and you’ve relocated-even if it’s in the same city, keep your cat indoors for 14 days. If a cat has just been relocated or is in a new environment and gets out during the first few days it’s very likely to get lost, become disoriented, and maybe hit and killed by a car.

The week following a trip or move.

Watch for signs of illness and dehydration. It’s normal for some cats to have diarrhea, sleep even more than normal, or vomit once or twice the day after the trip. If these conditions do not clear up in a day or two, if you notice blood in the urine or stool, or if the cats skin can be pulled and does not spring back into the body, seek veterinary care immediately. The sooner you catch and treat illness or dehydration, the more likely and quicker the cat will return to good health.

Final thoughts.

Every cat is different. I once had an orange tabby that loved to ride in the car with me. He ran to the front door when I picked up my car keys. I never used a carrier with him. He peacefully sat on my lap every time we got in the car. I currently have a large grey tabby that likes to ride in non-motorized boats. You know your cat better than anyone else. Check with your veterinarian if you have questions about the best way to travel with or relocate your cat. Keep in mind that cats are athletic and like security. Many easy going cats get agitated, dehydrated or run away while traveling or moving, so please use caution with your pet.

College Student Retention – Success Secrets For College Students, Student Advisors & Deans

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

College student retention is always on the forefront of the minds of college student advisors, deans, and administrators. Rightfully so, because without college students, colleges and universities cease to exist and the advisors and deans are without a job.

Therefore retention and academic success is hugely important to ensure the success of a college or university. As a former college student and lifelong learner who frequents college campuses speaking on this topic and occasionally taking some professional development coursework myself, I have observed and come to know a few reasons why colleges fail at retention and why college students become discouraged and leave college.

1. College students are tolerated rather than celebrated.

When the higher-ups in a college take a hierarchical approach to education and treat students like they are beneath them, students feel alienated and become disgruntled. Nobody likes to be mistreated, particularly college students paying high fees to attend a college.

When bureaucrats within college administration, the transcript office, and the student union treat college students disrespectfully rather than serving them gladly, it frustrates college students and tells them the college or university does not care about them.

When colleges treat their students like another number, eventually students opt for a different approach to pursue their career. Students like to be respected too and not made to stand in line excessively to collect documents, books, parking decals and trivial things that to them are meaningless.

2. College students get angry at being nickled and dimed by colleges.

College students quite frankly don’t like paying high tuition fees to attend college, only to later by charged for parking, and than get ticketed for parking in the wrong place when they were running late to class and there was inadequate parking to begin with.

Let’s face the facts. Professors themselves on many college campuses have a hard time finding a place to park. Yet colleges continue to profit by issuing parking tickets. Making students pay $50 to $100 a semester to park is bad enough. Colleges run their parking lots like Disney World, Sea World, and Universal Studios in Orlando, profiting handsomely along the way.

Even worse is when the college intentionally and purposefully pursues issuing parking tickets night and day to collect more revenue for the college. Robbing Peter (or your college students who are already challenged financially) to pay Paul (this being the college) doesn’t endear college students to the academic institution and university. On the contrary, it makes the burning mad and eventually mad enough to consider attending college elsewhere.

3. College students get demoralized when they approach their professor for help and the professor doesn’t give them the time of day, nor an adequate explanation for their problem.

Professors at colleges and universities just working to further their career, collect a paycheck, and publish their latest dissertation or book who don’t give students the time of day leave students feeling demoralized when they are struggling with a class.

Class assignments and college level material comes easier for some students than others. Therefore when a student is struggling and needs some additional time or help, the professor should make himself or herself available to help the student.

Unfortunately many times nowadays college professors just want to communicate via email, that is if they even check their email and reply in time to help the struggling student and answer their questions. Online forums are another method by which professors try to punt and shun students in need of help.

What colleges fail to realize however is students go to college for hands on instruction and interaction with professors, not to be alienated through an online course or partial net based course that keeps professors and college students at arms length.

4. Financial challenges and constraints cause students to withdraw from college.

Colleges aren’t free and students cannot always obtain financial aid. Scholarships are wonderful if a student can get one to go to college, but many students are forced to work a part-time job to survive financially and put themselves through college.

I know I worked a part-time job to put myself through college and rode a bicycle to and from school and work. The sacrifices I made to complete my college education were many.

With the current economic downturn and rising unemployment level, many college students are being laid off from part-time jobs and struggling financially to sustain themselves and pay for their college education.

5. Students withdraw from college when they don’t feel socially connected.

A solid social life wherein a student feels connected to other students on his or her college campus is vital to ensure their success. Emotional support and the comradery of friends who understand them and their struggles empower students to persevere with their college education.

When student advisors, deans, and college administration fail to account for and proactively facilitate the necessary social element that sustains students’ morale, they do themselves and their college a great disservice. Undeniably and undoubtedly, college students want to feel connected and a part of something larger than themselves. Yet it is not a connection to an academic institution per say that they desire as much as it is to their fellow students journeying with them through this season of college life.

Successful colleges therefore don’t just suggest and make social activities and associations available for students, but proactively facilitate and incorporate this into their college’s approach to education early on. By doing so, successful colleges provide every student, including those more shy students with less social initiative the opportunity to be actively engaged and socially interact with other students. This opens the door for meaningful interaction, communication, and the establishing of meaningful friendships among college students on campus. Without such students just fall through the cracks socially, tend to become isolated, and often disappear as they become disillusioned with the whole college experience.

These five reasons are the biggest reasons retention efforts among college students are not succeeding and students are withdrawing from college.

The good news is students and professionals desire to attend college. Most of us value and uphold education. The struggles along the way en route to obtaining a college education and further professional development however when a student steps on a college campus can be irritating and downright frustrating.

Retention coordinators and specialists on college campuses therefore need to urgently and wholeheartedly attend to these matters lest they be the next ones standing in the unemployment line, when college students walk out and say they have had enough.

Celebrity Wedding Rings – You Can Be Like the Stars, Too

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Whether we like it or not, the truth is that the lives of celebrities are scrutinized with magnifying glass-curiosity by the paparazzi, the media and fans alike. In fact, celebrities rule the airwaves and gossip columns today. Every little detail of a celebrity’s life is usually big news among the public at large, and one such aspect is the celebrity wedding rings flashed by our favorite star couples. Among the ardent fans of celebrities, are couples who would love nothing more than to own and wear celebrity weddings bands, as similar as possible to the ones worn by their celebrity heroes.

The fact remains that today many couples wish to be different in terms of their wedding styles, themes and even their wedding rings. It is specifically such couples who are also choosing celebrity wedding rings. If you and your partner wish to own and wear celebrity wedding bands as close as possible to those worn by your favorite celebrity couples, there are some simple ways to do this. For a start, you may color-copy, or scan the designs of the celebrity wedding rings worn by the particular celebrity couple from a close-up of the same, published in any glossy, celebrity magazine. If you succeed in getting a reasonably, legible scanned picture or laser color-copy, you can get an experienced designer of celebrity wedding bands to come up with a more detailed, illustration.

There are several jewelers who can come up with prototypes of the final designs you present to them. Such jewelers can then easily make your celebrity wedding bands at a cost far cheaper than the originals of your favorite star couple. On the other hand, there are also several certified, jewelers who have a range of celebrity wedding rings that are identical to the ones worn by top celebrities, although not necessarily of the same precious metal or gemstone authenticity. The advantage here is, that you will not only have celebrity wedding bands that are virtually identical copies to their celebrity-worn originals, but at a price far less than their originals.

Perhaps, why many young couples are desirous of having look-alike, celebrity wedding rings, is that it gives them a sense of confidence, style, sophistication, and, above all, the satisfaction of being different. Thankfully, with the widespread interest among people in the lives of celebrities, coupled with the power of the media, the opportunities to find actual photographs of the celebrity wedding rings and reproduce them have become extremely easy. While it’s true that original, celebrity wedding rings or celebrity wedding bands, cost enormous sums of money, inexpensive, copies of such wedding rings can be made by any experienced and professional jeweler, using cheaper grades of metal and gemstones.

In the final analysis however, celebrity wedding rings will certainly reflect your sense of style, personality and taste and that of your partner’s, as well as give the overall atmosphere of the wedding you’ve planned, a degree of sophistication. However, what matters most is, the love that you and your partner share. After all, the real celebrities … are you.

Starting Your Business – A Brief Guide to Some Key Issues

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

If you are thinking of starting a new business, or if you are just about to take the plunge, you will know that there is a lot that you have to do. Here are a few things to think about and do, before you dive straight into running your new business.

Trading Entity

One of the first things to consider is what type of legal entity you intend to use. Often people just start and don’t consider what business structure they need until later on. If you have any doubts I recommend you talk it through with your accountant or solicitor.

The basic types of business are a sole trader, a partnership, a limited company or a limited liability partnership. Whilst in some cases the structure can be changed relatively easily, it makes sense to give it some thought before you start. You should also think about your exit plans at this stage, as this may affect your choice of trading structure.

A sole trader is just that. You set up in business on your own. The business is no more than an extension of you in many ways, certainly as far as your finances go. This by far the easiest option for a lot of people, as there is less administration, but it can also be lonely. If you set up on your own look for ways to meet up with other business owners on a regular basis.

A partnership is two or more people working together, your liabilities are similar to those of a sole trader, though bear in mind that usually all partners are responsible for the actions of the others.

If you set up in partnership you should have some kind of agreement defining what the shares are and who gets what in the way of drawings and distributions. This will also cover what happens in the event of a major disagreement, or if one partner leaves for any reason.

Trading as a limited company can have many benefits, in particular it means that the business is a separate entity from you. This means that your liability is limited to the amount of share capital you have in the business. There may also be tax savings depending on your circumstances, but you should never make your decision based solely on tax implications.

There are more costs involved and often more red tape than with a sole trader or partnership. A company has to file various forms as well as its accounts with Companies House, and there is a cost involved in doing this, as well as in preparing the information.

A limited liability partnership is like a cross between a partnership and a limited company. It has a set up like a partnership, but the limited liability of a company. It must file records with Companies House in a similar way that a Limited Company would.

There are many areas to consider when deciding what trading structure is best for you. These include among others, the tax implications, your own financial situation – pensions, mortgage etc, whether you need a vehicle, what type of business you are setting up, whether there is a property involved, or a requirement for a property, how many people are setting up the business and what relationships are required.

The best thing to do is talk it over with your advisors and make an informed decision. What you are aiming to do is find a balance between the various issues that works for you.

If you start as a sole trader or partnership, you can always change into a limited company later on.

Tax

You need to make sure that your business complies with the (extensive) tax and information filing requirements imposed on you. If you don’t you will almost certainly incur problems, and financial penalties.

When you set up in business you have to register with the Inland Revenue for tax and National Insurance. If you will have staff you need to register for PAYE as well.

If you don’t register within the first three months you will be liable to a penalty of £100.

You don’t actually have to pay your tax until after the year end when you start, but for sole traders and partners National Insurance is paid weekly (or monthly) with a further one off payment at the end of the year once you reach a minimum level of profit.

If you have staff your PAYE must be paid every month and you will have various forms and returns to complete at the end of the tax year (mostly in May)

http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/

If you have already appointed your accountant they may do the registrations for you.

VAT

As with tax you also need to be aware of the requirements surrounding VAT.

You don’t have to register for VAT straight away, but it maybe worthwhile doing so. You have to register when your turnover reaches the registration threshold – £56,000 in 2003/04, unless you are in an exempt industry.

You can voluntarily register for VAT from day 1 (unless exempt). http://www.hmce.gov.uk/

Accountant

Find a good accountant, not someone who will just do your tax return at the end of the year but someone who is proactive and forward thinking. Ask around, get recommendations and interview a few. Make sure you like the person / firm and are happy to work with them. (See “10 Things To Ask Your Accountant”)

Banking

Open a bank account. Keep all your business transactions separate from your personal ones. You will find it much easier to manage – your accountant will like it too! Some people do actually just use their personal account. As with everything else in your business it makes sense to keep it all separate from your personal affairs – even if you are a sole trader working at home.

So find yourself a bank and a decent bank manager, and open a new account for the business. Or probably two or three. Have a current account and at least one savings account. This makes it easier to manage your money. Have one savings account for tax and VAT. Every month transfer the amount you owe for VAT, PAYE and taxes into this account and leave it there until the payment is due. That way you never have to worry about how to pay these important bills. If you are the kind of business that receives money in advance from clients or deposits, it is also a good idea to hold this in a separate account. Just transfer it into your main account as you do the work.

Where to work

Decide where you are going to work. You have many choices – at home, in an office, in a warehouse, near to customers, out of town….. What is right for you and your business? Deciding where to base yourself may depend on many factors. Unless you are starting some kind of retail business or need something like a warehouse, you really can be where you want to these days.

Firstly do you have to be in a certain place? And I mean have to as in a shop must be on the high street, rather than you think you ought to be based somewhere for the prestige, or because everyone else in your industry is there. Do you need to be next to a transport link, either for deliveries, access to a distribution network or because you service those industries that do?

Do you need a smart office? Very unlikely I suspect whatever you might think about “image” etc. You can rent a room for important meetings. Remember, you can create the perception of a large company even if you work in a box room at home. You can have virtual everything now, smart address, telephone, fax, assistant…….. so don’t go into an office you can’t afford because of the way it will make you look.

Working at home may not be an option if other family members will be there, for example if you have young children and you need to be on the telephone for a large part of your day, this will not be practical unless you can shut yourself away. Wherever you work you need to consider the image you project and children (or pets) being noisy in the background isn’t professional – however much you love them!

You may also want to consider proximity to others. If you need to be out and about a lot it may be worth being reasonably central to keep your travelling costs and time down.

Working at home will almost certainly be the cheapest option, and is very common these days.

You may wish to think about serviced offices. These are rented offices with full backup support, such as reception, telephone answering, copying, secretarial, meeting rooms and so on. They can be ideal for new businesses, but they don’t come cheap. And watch the extras, with the bigger names you can double your bill with extras quite easily. The advantage is that they can be taken very short term – a month at a time, and the additional facilities. You can be on your own but have full office support. The downside is the cost, and most of them offer a virtual service to businesses, so you can work at home and still get all the upside without the big bill. And no one else will know the difference.

Alternatively if you cannot or choose not to work at home and serviced offices aren’t for you then you will be looking at rented offices or warehouse space. Unless you have funds to buy.

Some Quick Tips

Write your Business Plan. It may sound obvious, but lots of people don’t do it. There are lots of places where you can find free help and advice, just do a search on the internet, or ask your business advisor.

Make sure you know how you are going to finance your new business. Have you plans to survive the first 3-6 months whatever happens?

Research your market. Make sure there is demand, do people want what you have to sell?

Read The E-Myth Revisited By Michael E Gerber. It has to be THE book for new business owners.

Get a domain name the same as your business name or one that describes what you do. Having a free email address just screams out “small home business” even if you’re not!

Children’s Furniture

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Your child will soon grow up to really appreciate their surroundings. They will soon be at the stage where they will understand the necessities of what a bedroom should be like. Then comes the inevitable: they’ll choose the furniture for their selves. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that because they are in charge of their own room.

The bed is not the only thing that your child will change. They’ll change the complete makeup of the room from the headboards to the bookshelves. Fortunately you can find complete childrens furniture in online stores and look at them with your child. You won’t be disappointed in the selection of furniture that’s available.

A child’s bedroom should reflect more than just the bed; it should reflect their imaginations. If they are adventurous and action-oriented, then buy furniture that’s geared toward that. Fantasy-filled? There’s furniture for that, too. There is nothing that can’t be done in this regard. Your child will have much furniture from which to choose and you’ll be able to go with them.

Your child’s bedroom is going to more than just a bedroom, too. It’s going to be a central area where games are played and friends are going to spend the night. As such, you should buy childrens furniture that best reflects the child’s needs in regards to space and imagination.

Go Kart Engine Repair – Ignition System Diagnostics and Repair Part 1

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Go Kart Engine Diagnostics: Solid State Ignition Failure Detection

I have had a couple of times where I had some dramatic failures occur on my go kart engines. One time I had a chain snap and the chain made a ferocious clunk and then fell off the go kart. The funny thing is that the engine kept running, and I had to shut it off.

I replaced the chain and ran into a peculiar problem. The engine would not start.

This is where most of us, with NO engine experience just throw up our hands and kick the go kart and go away. Then we throw it in the back of the pickup and bring it over to “Smokin Joes Lawnmower Repair.” There we spend about $200 to have the engine fixed.

I am here to tell you forget about going to “Smokin Joes.

First of all a basic understanding of ignition systems is required. (I am assuming that you understand the Otto Cycle or 4 cycle engine theory, so I will dispense with that SnoozeVille explanation)

Ignition systems are basically partial generators. The flywheel has a magnet, and the Magneto has a coil of wire in it.

The theory behind electric current is that when a wire (a simple wire ) is passed through a magnetic field that an electric current is induced into the wire.

And conversely, when a wire is induced with an electric current it gives off a magnetic field.

The Magneto (the device that the spark plug wire comes out of) has a coil of wire in it plus a core of iron to attract or concentrate the magnetic flux lines into the wire.

The wire then gets an instantaneous jump in electricity as the magnetic field in the flywheel passes by it. The sudden increase in electricity is concentrated as high voltage which is released as a spark in the spark plug.

The timing, or the firing of the electricity to the spark plug is regulated by circuitry. This particular circuitry is activated by a small magnetic sensing switch (which looks like a small cylinder of steel tucked in with the coil). When the magnet passes by the magnetic field activates the switch. The switch then releases the coil energy into the spark plug.

The spark plug is nothing more than a glorified jumping bridge for electricity. We all are familiar with this static discharge when we scrub our feet against the floor and the reach out and touch somebody. A spark jumps when we get close, like .125 inches and closer.

The design of the spark plug is to keep the electricity isolated up to the bridge. Once the electricity from behind shoves real hard, it forces the electrons in front to jump. Kind of like getting pushed off of a bridge.

So the white part of the spark plug is non-conductive and an insulator. The metal part is isolated from the rest of the spark plug and only becomes integral when spark completes the circuit or jumps across the gap.

Obviously, sparks cause the right concentration of Oxygen and Combustible gases or even dust, to ignite. Ignition is the excited state of electrons jumping from one molecule to another. This excited state releases heat and light: we call that flame or ionized gas.

Next time we will discuss how to trouble shoot the ignition system so that you do not have to pay Smokin Joes what you just have learned…and will learn.

The Top 5 Mistakes in Small Engine Repair

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Many people start to look into why their lawnmower, snow blower, or chainsaw doesn’t start or run properly only to fail and curse in frustration. There is a reason for this that anyone can overcome just by avoiding these 5 common errors.

1. They have no plan of attack. If you were to decide to put a garden in your backyard or to build a garage to work out of you wouldn’t just start cutting wood and nailing it together. You would in fact purchase a design or create one yourself. If you are going to resolve the issues with your small engine equipment, you must have a plan of attack to avoid repetition and to ensure you cover all the bases.

2. They never check the basics. There are a few simple things that every internal combustion engine must have to operate properly whether it’s on your boat, car, lawnmower, or trimmer. These are: Compression, Spark, and a Proper Fuel/Air Mixture. You cannot attempt to resolve your small engine problems without knowing if these things exist at acceptable levels in your unit.

3. They don’t check things properly. The biggest thing I see on the internet in forums and blogs about small engines is that they claim to have spark coming to their sparkplug but the engine won’t fire and fuel pours out the exhaust or the plug is wet. Spark performs differently under compression then it does without it. You cannot accurately test for spark by resting your sparkplug against the engine and cranking it over. If your ignition module or sparkplug are weak and not providing sufficient output (about 12KV or more) you may in fact see spark when tested without compression but as soon as you try to run the unit the spark disappears.

4. They never move ahead to the next possible issue. Someone once told me that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. If you have no spark, for example, cleaning your sparkplug and retesting and retesting isn’t going to get you spark. You need to know how the ignition system on your engine works and properly fault find the issue at hand moving ahead and systematically removing what could be causing the issue.

5. They don’t seek professional assistance. Sometimes a problem is bigger than you can handle, or maybe you need to learn some things to resolve a specific small engine problem. Going to your neighbour who tuned up his lawnmower at the start of the year, or your local automotive repairman won’t get you what you need. Automotive isn’t what it used to be and unless your mechanic was wrenching in the 1970s then he probably doesn’t really understand your small engine. This is because they are designed and operate differently. Cars and trucks have computers and modules that are tested using a code reader whereas your snow blower does not. If you don’t know how a small engine operates exactly, then you probably will never solve your problem. I don’t ask my dentist why my back hurts and I doubt you do either.

So if you’re trying to resolve an issue with your lawnmower, snow blower, or riding mower, remember these simple mistakes and avoid them. Seek out a reliably trained and experienced Small Engine Technician and ask his advice. Learn to do simple trouble shooting and fault finding techniques that are proven and work every time because they follow the basic principle of how small engines work.

Best regards,

Al

How to Find a Certified Dog Trainer

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Are you in the market for a dog trainer? Do you want your dog to learn from a top notch certified dog trainer? You may have dreams of seeing your dog in professional dog competitions and shows. Therefore, you need to have your dog trained by a certified dog trainer to ensure the best results.

Why should you hire a certified dog trainer instead of a basic dog trainer? A certified dog trainer is one that takes their dog training career seriously enough to become certified. You can feel comfortable in the fact that they have met high dog training standards and passed certification exams and tests. You don’t want a fly-by-night dog trainer, but a certified dog trainer that is in it for the long haul.

How do you find a certified dog trainer? There are numerous dog trainers available in the market place today. Dog trainers range in age, skill level, and experience. Your neighbor might tell you that they are a dog trainer because they have read a few books on the subject and taught their dog to fetch the newspaper. This is not sufficient dog training experience.

You should consult a variety of resources. Try asking your dog breeder, groomer, and veterinarian. They can direct you to local dog training schools that have certified dog trainers on their faculty. Various pet supply stores have dog training programs that train and certify their dog trainers. Example pet supply stores include PETCO.

However, research what they mean by “certification”. Is the certification by PETCO standards only or by a universal certification? Find out what the requirements are for their certified dog trainers. Only then can you determine if their dog trainers will supply the skill level and experience you desire.

You need to find a dog trainer that has had comprehensive training and can proudly demonstrate that they are a certified dog trainer. Be aware, though, that there are many “certified dog training” schools and home correspondence courses available. Not all of these schools are credible nor do they provide proper instruction. You need to find a dog trainer that has certification as described by the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers.

The Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers is a well respected organization that provides testing and certification services for dog trainers. They administer specific dog training tests in various states around the country approximately twice per year. These intensive tests root out the professional dog trainer from the average dog trainer. Check out their website at: http://www.ccpdt.org/.

The Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers also provides a listing of certified dog trainers. You can search through this listing to find a certified dog trainer in your area. This roster of certified dog trainers comprises certified dog trainers all over the world. The certified dog trainer list will give you their contact information including name, city, phone number, and e-mail address. Another great feature is that they list the date the dog trainer became certified. This will let you know how many years they have been in the dog training business. Peruse the list at: [http://ccpdt.org/rstr/index.html].

Certified pet trainers do not only need to pass a certification exam and testing, they must also continue their education through workshops, conferences, and other means. When selecting a certified dog trainer ask them about the extent of their continuing education. You want a certified dog trainer that continues to hone their craft. They should actively learning about various dog training methods. This demonstrates that they are committed to providing the best dog training.

A certified dog trainer should have at least three to five years of dog training experience. This is especially true if they charge higher fees. You can take the plunge with a newly certified dog trainer if cost is an issue. Newly certified dog trainers may charge lower rates in order to establish a list of clients and garner experience. “Master” certified dog trainers are those that have twenty to thirty years of experience. They may have great skill and in depth background experience, but may come at a higher price.

You have the beginning knowledge regarding finding a certified dog trainer. Spend time searching resources available through your dog breeder, veterinarian, and pet supply store. Scour the book store, library, and Internet for detailed information. You can find a certified dog trainer in your area as well.

You wouldn’t go to an unlicensed doctor would you? So why would go to a trainer that is not certified? Certified dog trainers are out there and ready to help you and your pooch learn valuable skills. They are committed to your dog, their career, and learning everything they can about becoming a top notch dog trainer. Who knows, your certified dog trainer may help your dog win the Westminster dog show. Not only would your dog be trained well and achieve glory, but the expense would be well worth it.

VIX and the Psychology of Markets

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

We know that greed and fear rule the markets. But did you know that when investors gets too greedy, markets usually fall, and when investors are overcome with fear, markets usually rise. So how can when we monitor investors emotions and take advantage of investors emotional extremes?

Welcome to the world of investor sentiment analysis.

Investor psychology has been analysed for at least 250 years. Charles MacKay wrote his book, ‘Extraordinary Popular Delusions And The Madness Of Crowds’, in 1841, describing, among other manias, the herd mentality that caused the South Sea Bubble. Since then, many academics have published financial theories based on the concept that individuals act rationally and consider all available information in the decision-making process. But real life frequently demonstrates that the behavior of equity markets is irrational and unpredictable. A field known as “behavioural finance” has evolved over the years attempting to explain how emotions influence investors and their decision-making process. Studying human psychology helps predict the general direction of financial markets as well as many stock market bubbles and crashes. At the height of a period of optimism, greed moves stocks higher, ignoring business fundamentals and therefore creating an overpriced market. At the other extreme, fear moves prices lower, ignoring obvious opportunities and creates an undervalued market.

One important study, (“Aspects of Investor Psychology,” The Journal of Portfolio Management, Summer 1998) found that investors are much more distressed by prospective losses than they are made happy by equivalent gains. Some researchers theorize that investors “follow the crowd” and conventional wisdom to avoid any regret in the event their decisions prove to be incorrect.

QUANTIFYING INVESTOR EMOTIONS OR INVESTOR SENTIMENT

When a stock or market index rises, we know that it means investors are more eager to buy than to sell. But how can we accurately gauge just how investors feel?

Most often, investors are somewhere between mildly positive and mildly negative, and only occasionally do they demonstrate the extremes of greed or fear. It is easier to detect emotion when it is close to either irrational exuberance or outright fear. When markets act this way, it becomes “news” and moves from the business section, to being featured at the start of the evening news, and on the front page of the daily newspaper.

The success of charting as a tool, depends on investors repeating their behaviour patterns. There is always a comfort factor in doing the same as others and generally an aversion to behaving differently. Investors display herding instincts in their behaviour and this has become particularly noticeable among institutional investors. In the early stages of a rising trend in a market, positive sentiment can act as a positive driving force as everyone rushes in to join the party. However, there comes a time after the trend has been in place, when this positive sentiment acts as a warning that the trend is nearing its climax. That’s when smart investors will start switching to alternative investments.

The most sophisticated and active players in the market use derivative products to effect their transactions. These players tend to display earlier changes in emotion than most investors and normally their emotions run to greater extremes. So, derivative markets are a good source of data on investor sentiment. There are various options available on stocks, ETF’s and indexes. By using an option pricing formula, we can extract a measure of how much investors are prepared to pay for the possibility of making a profit, or hedging against a loss. This is known as implied volatility, and it provides a mathematical valuation of investor emotion. Implied volatility tends to be high (the scale is inverted) when the market has had a sharp fall and this is associated with investor fear. At the other extreme, low implied volatility often occurs after a rise in the market and when investors are becoming complacent.

Implied volatility image

WHAT IS THE VIX?

VIX is the symbol for the Chicago Board Options Exchange’s volatility index for the S&P 500 (SPX). It is a measure of the level of implied volatility and not historical or statistical volatility. A numerical value for the VIX has been published by the CBOE since 1993. The method of calculating VIX was changed in early 2003. Instead of using the S&P 100 (OEX) Index options, it is now calculated using the options on the S&P 500 (SPX). Also note that the VXN is the symbol for the implied volatility index of the NASDAQ 100 index.

The implied volatilities are weighted to give the VIX a value that in effect acts as the implied volatility of an at-the-money SPX option at 22-trading days to expiration. The VIX represents the implied volatility of a hypothetical at-the-money SPX option. If implied volatility is high, the premium on options will be high and vice versa. Generally speaking, rising option premiums reflect rising expectation of future volatility of the underlying stock index, which represents higher implied volatility levels. The higher the VIX, the more panic in the markets and the greater the chance that investors have given up hope, taken their money, and gone home.

Comparing the movement of the VIX with that of the market can quite often provide clues as to the future direction the market might move. The more the VIX increases in value, the more “panic” is an issue in the market place. On the flip side, the more the VIX decreases in value, the more complacency there is amongst investors. The psychological impact measured by a relatively high VIX is a clear indicator that tells traders markets are oversold. A historic example was displayed on July 23rd 2002 when the VIX shot over 55. That big move coincided with a significant low in the Dow Jones Industrial Average that was followed by a 1,034-point, six-day rally. That rally didn’t stick and the market again re-tested its July low in October of 2002. But throughout this double bottom in 2002 the VIX accurately identified a major directional shift in the market. At its core, the VIX is a statistical measure of emotions, and emotions are a major factor signalling capitulation in the market.

http://www.theuptrend.com/ebook/Impliedvolatility2.gif

INVERSE RELATIONSHIP

Extremely high readings of VIX indicate market bottoms, while low readings indicate market tops.

The VIX actually has an inverse relationship to the stock market. This is one of the first things you’ll notice when viewing the VIX on a bar chart. When the VIX goes down the stock market moves higher. When the VIX advances, the stock market is headed lower. Generally speaking, a rising stock market is considered less risky by investors. On the other hand, a declining stock market is considered more risky. Therefore, the higher the perceived risk by investors the higher the implied volatility. This will make options, especially put options, more expensive.

When the phrase “implied volatility” is mentioned, keep in mind that it is not about the size of price swings. Rather it’s the implied risk that is associated with taking a position in the stock market. When the stock market declines, the demand for put options usually increases. Increased demand means higher put option prices.

USING VIX to TIME the MARKET

One early study identified a VIX value of 25 as normal, and a value above 35 as high. Between October 1997 and May 2001 the VIX indicator went above 35 eleven times. In this study, the S&P 500 index as represented by SPY ETF. was purchased each time and held until the VIX retreated below 25. There were 9 profitable trades for an average gain of 3.1% and an average holding period of about one month. By using this VIX timing scheme you could capture 80% of total gains in the market, but your money is only at risk one third of the time.

Extremes in fear mark great buying opportunities.

Sample chart

http://www.theuptrend.com/ebook/Impliedvolatility4.gif

THE CONTRARIAN VIEW POINT OF THE VIX

An extended and/or extremely low VIX suggests a high degree of complacency and is commonly considered bearish. From the contrarian view point ,many traders are of the opinion that if the VIX becomes low, they’ll begin looking for a reason to begin selling stock. On the flip-side of the coin, a very high VIX can indicate a high degree of anxiety which often leads to panic among options traders. This action is often considered bullish by the contrarian, and they’ll look for reasons to begin buying stock. High VIX readings usually occur after an extended or sharp market decline with investor sentiment still very bearish. Some contrarians view readings above 35 as bullish. Hence, they’ll begin looking for a major market turn to the upside.

The VIX should be used in conjunction with “regular” analysis of price action on price charts. The wise trader will never make a purchase or sale based solely on the price level of the VIX. The wise trader will use the VIX (and its support and resistance levels) in conjunction with the price action of charts of the S&P 500, the Dow, and the NASDAQ.

Using the VIX with charts of these indices will help you get a good grasp of the current market psychology. Since market movements are based entirely on human emotions, it is important for traders to understand psychological indicators. When the VIX is used correctly it helps you stay on the right side of the market and make profitable trades.

SUMMARY

Understanding Investor Sentiment (or Investor Psychology) is by far the most powerful tool an investor can use to understand exactly where the stock market is, and where it is going. But it is often hard to digest, as it is counter intuitive to our human nature.

Here is a recent example that will help illustrate this point.

In September 2005, the TSX was making multi year highs. While the VIX Indexes was down near multi year lows. Standing back and looking at these two pieces of information, you might question the wisdom of adding long-term money to this market at this time.

You might, but human nature would not.

From GARY NORRIS

Canadian Press

Canadians are shovelling money into mutual funds almost like it’s 2001 again, with September purchases of $1.8 billion – up from net redemptions of $545 million a year ago.

The Investment Funds Institute of Canada said Monday that investments in long-term funds – equity, bond and other funds excluding short-term money market funds – topped half a trillion dollars for the first time. “This underlines the fact that investors are making long-term commitments to funds, and not simply parking their investments temporarily in money market funds,” commented Tom Hockin, president of the fund industry association.

Sales in the first nine months of the year, net of redemptions and excluding reinvested distributions, totaled $18.4 billion, “the highest net sales figure since the same period in 2001,” Hockin observed.

Yes, you read that correctly, Canadian have not been this enthusiastic since the last time the market was peaking.

Now we don’t have enough data yet, but since Canadian Mutual Fund investors did their “extreme” mutual fund shopping last month, the market has already dropped 800 points.

Now ask yourself, if you were going to put money into this market, was September the best, low risk time to do so in the past 5 years? Were these investors thinking analytically, or did the emotion of greed cloud their judgments?

My guess is that this is what I like to call “Panic Buying”, of Canadian Mutual Funds last month, will signal the very top of this market, and be the catalyst for a major sell off.

Only time will tell if I am right.

Business Plan Financial Projections: Stop Worrying About Being Right…

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Business plan financial projections seem daunting because

they are so uncertain. This very uncertainty, however, is

what makes preparing them easy because you can’t possibly be

right. You can’t predict the future. None of us can. All you

can be is competent in the way you prepare your business plan

projections.

Before you finalize your business plan this year, consider

these six caveats to preparing your business plan financial

projections:

1. Don’t offer pull-out-of-the-air, “conservative”

guesstimates about getting some percentage of the overall

market demand or year-over-year growth.

It is a mistake to assume that business investors will

appreciate your being conservative with your business plan

financial projections in the early years of your business.

Don’t think for a Wall Street minute that presenting

“conservative” business plan financial projections indicates

“realism” to prospective business investors. Business investors

invest for one reason: to earn a return on their money. How

long the money is invested influences the amount of the return

earned. Let’s say a business investor wants to triple an

investment. Well, if that investment triples in 3 years, the

return is 44%. If it triples in five years, the return is

25%. Adding just two years to the investment period nearly

halves the return! Now do you see why time is so important

to a business investor? Here are a few other examples: let’s

say a business investor wants to:

Make 5 times an investment in 3 years = 71% return

Make 5 times an investment in 5 years = 38% return

Make 7 times an investment in 3 years = 91% return

Make 7 times an investment in 5 years = 48% return

Make 10 times an investment in 3 years = 115% return

Make 10 times an investment in 5 years = 59% return

So, while you may find it attractive to figure out how to

make “just a living” until the business venture proves

itself, you now understand why business investors want sales

and earnings to grow absolutely as fast as possible, without

being deceived, in your business plan financial projections.

On the whole, business investors are risk averse only to the

extent that they don’t want to lose their money or tie it up

in a low return investment. Typically when you make the claim

that your business plan financial projections are “conservative”,

it usually just means that you have no idea how and why you’ll

achieve a certain level of sales within a certain time frame.

Interesting, these kinds of estimates, provided that you’ve

done some good thinking about market segments and overall

demand, often turn out to be too low. Remember, it’s just as

bad to underestimate your sales, as it is to overestimate

them.

2. Avoid calculating costs as a straight percentage of

revenues.

Sure it’s easier to do things this way, especially with

Excel and other business plan financial projection software.

Costs are real, however. You need to know what they are very

specifically. If you’ve done your homework in developing

your business plan, then you should already have this information,

or at least the basis of it. Just estimate and calculate your

costs on a product-by-product basis.

With these warnings in mind, use the following steps to

develop your business plan financial projections:

Think about what percentage of the overall market share your

competitors already own. Assume that they will continue

their present trends in growth. (Note: some competitors may

already be trending down and losing market share.) Temper

your market share estimates with some discussion of how your

entry into the market will affect these trends. Then,

estimate the percent of total, potential demand that remains

available to you.

Now, based on the limitations of your operations plans,

calculate how much of this remaining available demand you

can achieve. This is a very simple calculation. Start with

your overall productive unit capacity and factor it by the

expected yield of sellable product, then multiply these unit

sales by their respective selling prices and voila, you have

the revenue numbers for your business plan financial projections.

Let’s take an example.

Your research indicates that 2 out of every 10 females age

23 to 55 will under go some type of non-invasive cosmetic

treatment in your area. Your research also shows that this

number is expected to grow 20% each year over the next 5

years. There are 40,000 females in your target market. You

identified four competitors in your target market. These

four competitors currently handle on average 6 procedures a

day. You plan to start a non-invasive cosmetic treatment

center that uses the most advanced technology and is thus

capable of performing an average of 7 procedures a day.

Using this data you calculate the following statistics

about your market and market potential:

Total market 40,000 females x 20% = 8,000 procedures per

year

4 competitors x 6 procedures x 250 days = 6,000 procedures

per year

Available procedures: 8,000 less 6,000 = 2,000 per year

Your productive capacity: 7 procedures a day x 250 days =

1,750 or 21.875% of the total market. The average selling

price for a procedure is $400. Thus, the revenue for the first

year in your business plan financial projection would be 1,750

procedures times $400 or $700,000.

Now, let’s say you’re were projecting 2,200 procedures per

year. This would mean that you would have to alter your

operating plan to be able to perform 2,200 procedures. You

would also have to demonstrate how you would capture an

additional 200 procedures from your competitors.

Granted this is an over simplified example, but it should

give you a feel for how this process works.

Regarding price, in most cases you should have a clear idea

of how to price your product or service. There are usually

other, similar products or services out on the market.

Unless your competitive advantage is a cost reduction and/or

unless price is a critical basis of competition, just

estimate the value of your improvement and add it on to the

average price currently offered in the marketplace. In order

to make this estimate, you’ll have to be talking to

potential users. Find out what they pay now. Find out how

they feel about the current price. Ask them if they’d be

willing to pay more and how much more. If you ask enough

people, you’ll get a general idea.

3. Never determine price on the basis of a margin you think

is attractive.

The market will pay you only for the value you deliver,

which is determined by the consumer paying the final price.

It’s easy to make the mistake of thinking that a 20%, 40% or

even a 60% margin is great. Never considering that if the

product or service you’re offering provides a real

advantage. If you do this, you may be grossly

underestimating the price you can get in the marketplace and

underestimating your business plan financial projections.

Consumers don’t think in terms of margins. They could care

less about what you ought, “reasonably”, to get for your

product. That’s why you must find out the most that they’ll

pay. This is the value of your product or service. Come up

with some reasonable basis for determining this real value.

Keep in mind the obvious: If the consumer’s value on the

final product or service is less than your cost plus a

reasonable profit to keep your business growing, you’re in

trouble. Your business model will not be sustainable and your

business plan financial projections useless.

Now calculate the costs of manufacturing and distributing

your product. These costs flow directly from your revenues

estimates and operations plan. How much will it cost to

purchase what equipment and materials, hire what personnel,

engage in what selling efforts, pay what accountants and

lawyers, rent what kind of space and so forth, to achieve

the revenues you’re showing in your business plan financial

projections. You must be very specific. Project your costs

over time. Keep them tied to the units you need to sell to

achieve the revenues in your business plan financial

projections.

Obviously, costs and revenues work hand in hand.

4. Keep your fixed cost low.

Keep in mind that none of these revenues and the cost

estimates are going to be perfectly accurate, which means

the amount of profit or cash available to pay “fixed” cost

isn’t going to be accurate either. As a result, you can lose

your shirt trying to pay for equipment, a receptionist, or

other activities that don’t contribute to the sole objective

of making sales. Wherever possible, rent space, rent time on

equipment, answer your own phones, etc. To the extent that

you keep costs variable in your business plan financial

projections, you can cut back when sales are slower than

expected. It’s the worst situation to have a big,

well-furnished office with an expensive secretary who

needs the job, when the money isn’t coming in. High fixed

costs in your business plan financial projections also send

the wrong message to investors that you know more about the

“form” of doing business than about actually making money.

Now pull all your numbers together to prepare the financial

statements that summarize your business plan financial

projections. You need three basic statements: cash flow

analysis, income statements, and balance sheets. All of

these come directly from the above calculations. Your cash

flow analysis indicates when and what amounts of capital

infusion you’ll need to start and sustain your business plan.

Make your income and balance sheet projections on the

assumption that you’ll get the capital. For the first year

or two of your business plan financial projections, present

each of these statements on at least a quarterly basis.

Monthly is best. I suggest doing a 24- or 36-month projection

depending on your growth plans and changes in the industry that

you foresee. Follow these monthly or quarterly projections with

annual projections till you cover a span of 5 years.

Finally, run through some “what-if” scenarios or sensitivity

analysis. Though you business plan financial projections should

be based on your best, and best-supported estimates of costs

and revenues, you know you can’t be 100% right. That’s why it’s

important to identify those elements or assumptions of your

business plan financial projections that you feel are most

uncertain. Write out the nature of the uncertainty and the range

you think the estimates will fluctuate up or down. Then change

the estimates accordingly and re-run all your statements.

Pay close attention to how your business plan financial

projections, especially cash flows, change when you change

each assumption. This will help you determine how much

“cushion” you have available and, if business isn’t going

according to plan, at what point cash will become an issue.

5. Do not simply assume that costs and revenues may be

“off”, up or down, by some percentage.

Again, I know that Excel makes it easy to do this. For all

the same reasoning as above, stay focused on the assumptions

and details that make up your business plan financial projections.

It’s the details you need to examine for their sensitivity and

their impact on the bottom line. You only need to alter those

specific items that you’re most uncertain about. If it’s revenues

that you’re worried about, is it the price, the volume, or

both that concerns you most? How big a swing in the estimate

are you worried about, in what direction and why? If it’s

your cost projections that are keeping you awake at night,

which cost elements and why? Things like rents and labor

costs can be determined fairly accurately. But maybe you’re

unsure about materials or labor availability or how

efficiently you can produce your products or provide your

services. Maybe you’ll have to pay extra to ensure their

availability. This kind of thinking forms the basis for running

“what-if” or sensitivity analysis on your business plan financial

projections.

6.Do not include every possible business

plan financial projection scenario in your business plan.

Both you and your investors need to know what aspects of the

business plan financial projections are most uncertain,

represent the most risk, in what direction, why, and how

they affect the bottom line. Having hundreds of alternative

scenarios to sort through is like a man with two watches

showing two different times… he never knows what time it is.

Lots of alternative business plan financial projections also

indicate that you’re not too sure about anything. This is an

impossible way to communicate with business investors, manage

your business, or make important decisions. It’s much more

effective to identify the risky areas of your plan, tell why

and how they impact the bottom line and what actions you

plan to take if they occur. This helps you and your business

investors stay focused on the high impact areas and to think

clearly about whether other factors should be considered as

well. It also lends more credibility to your talents and

increases the likelihood of your plan’s success.

Finish this discussion with a summary of the critical

aspects of your plan and related contingency plans. If

you’ve followed all these steps, then you can figure out

what you’ll do if your actual performance turns out to be

different than your business plan financial projections.

Remember, you’re purpose is to demonstrate to business investors

that you’re competent; worrying about protecting their investment

and running a business, not just flying by the seat of your pants.

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

A freshwater fish tank is the best option to be considered for either beginners to the world of fish tanks, or for individuals looking to cut down on the time requirement necessary to maintain the tanks. When people think about fish tanks, they are most often picturing the freshwater variety. From cost, to set up, to ongoing maintenance, a freshwater fish tank can be a terrific way to add new pets to your home while minimizing the effort necessary to maintain them.

When setting up a freshwater fish tank, you’ll first need to assemble your supplies. The first supply, quite obviously, is the tank itself. One of the hardest parts of deciding which tank to use is the size of the tank. For a beginning fish enthusiast, your best bet will be to choose a smaller tank. This will mean less water and surface areas to maintain, and less fish to care for. Once your experience with fish tanks builds, you’ll be able to move to larger and more expansive tanks. You may find along the way, however, that a smaller tank is simply a smarter option to maintain in your home.

You will need to gather additional supplies beyond the tank as well. Some of the most important supplies you will need are gravel to line the bottom of the tank, a filter to ensure the exchange of clean water within the tank, a tiny vacuum to help maintain the water and gravel quality within the tank, water test kits to ensure healthy water property levels, a heater depending on the type of fish you will maintain in your freshwater fish tank, and cleaning supplies to be able to perform regular maintenance within the tank.

Once you’ve chosen your freshwater fish tank and assembled your supplies, you’ll next need to locate the perfect spot within your home to set it up. Ensure that you do not choose an area of high traffic – the danger would be too great that someone – human or other pet – would accidentally bump into the tank and cause it to break. Pick a sturdy table, desk, or platform to set the tank up on. Remember that you will also need room to store your supplies nearby. Once you have set up the actual aquarium, carefully wash it, inside and out. Also wash all of the supplies you have chosen for your freshwater fish tank. You can then begin to add water to your fish tank. Do so slowly and carefully.

Once the water is added, you may be anxious to add your fish, but you still will need to test the water, create a balanced pH environment, set up your filter and heater, and ensure that the tank itself is in good working order before fish are introduced. Once you are sure that all other aspects of the freshwater fish tank are in place and tested, you may then begin to add your fish to the tank. Do so one at a time so they can acclimate to their new home. Going forward, with simple and careful maintenance, you can work to enjoy your freshwater fish tank for many years to come.

Can You Be Your Own Internet Marketing Specialist?

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

The role of an internet marketing specialist is to drive traffic

to a website and to assist with the improvement of conversion

rates – converting website visitors to buyers. Some individuals

are good at driving traffic and others are good at creating web

copy that closes sales. In order to be a full-service internet

marketing specialist, you really have to have the skill to do

both because enormous amounts of traffic doesn’t matter a bit if

that traffic does not result in revenue.

Even so, different people have different talents and one person’s

gifts may complement another’s. So, if you have strong skills in

one area and not the other, you may need to work with an internet

marketing specialist whose strengths compensate for your

weaknesses and vice versa. Sometimes an internet marketing team

achieves much more than any internet marketing specialist could

do alone.

Specific tasks that an internet marketing specialist or team of

internet marketers engage in to accomplish the two main purposes

of internet marketing – driving traffic and closing sales -

include:

1. Brainstorming

2. Market research

3. Identification of target markets and niche markets

4. Competitor analysis

5. Development of products and services

6. Creation of a unique selling proposition

7. Keyword research

8. Identification, analysis and selection of marketing

channels

9. Budgeting

10. Strategic planning and setting of milestones

11. Creation of marketing materials including sales copy

12. Website development

13. Administration of the internet marketing plan

14. Analysis of the effectiveness of the marketing program

15. Continual strengthening and improvement of the marketing

plan and marketing program

Effectively addressing all of these tasks that are necessary for

productive internet marketing really requires quite a vast skill

set. Everybody has strengths and weaknesses in various areas of

internet marketing. It is ideal if you have an internet marketing

team made up of individuals that are internet marketing

specialists in all of these areas; however, reality is not always

ideal. Because it is rare for any one individual to be strong in

each of these areas most people need professional assistance from

an internet marketing specialist with one or more of the internet

marketing tasks.

If you work with an internet marketing specialist or a team of

internet marketers, it is vital that everyone on the team

communicates clearly and effectively. With clear communication

the results from specific internet marketing tasks can be

integrated to create a strong, effective internet marketing

program that produces significant results in regard to driving

traffic and generating revenues.

In order to determine whether or not you are capable of being

your own internet marketing expert rather than contracting your

internet marketing tasks to an internet marketing specialist or

an internet marketing firm, do an honest analysis of your skills

as they relate to the fifteen internet marketing tasks mentioned

previously. In reviewing them, you are sure to find some that you

feel confident about and some that cause uncertainty. If you are

not comfortable with your own internet marketing knowledge and

skills, you may choose to hire an internet marketing specialist

to complete the tasks you are uneasy about, or you may choose to

pursue training or education to enhance your knowledge of

internet marketing and strengthen your own skills.

With desire, drive, time and perseverance, just about anyone can

become an internet marketing specialist. To be an effective

internet marketing specialist you must be willing to learn from

others as well as learning from your own mistakes. As you gain

experience in internet marketing, you will naturally develop

expertise and as time marches on you will undoubtedly feel more

comfortable with tasks that seem complex at first and you will

definitely gain self-confidence as you experience the positive

effects of your internet marketing efforts.

Internet Marketing Business 7-Step Guide To Success

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

1. Internet Marketing: Is It worth Your While?

As of March 2007, 16.9% of the world’s 6.5 billion population was using the internet which roughly translates into 1.2 billion people! Asia boasts more than 50% of the world’s population and of that Asian populous only 10.7% is currently online as compared to almost 70% of the North American population!

Pros: The internet is one vast marketing arena that grows bigger and bigger every year. Put another way, in the year of 2006, online advertising racked up revenue in excess of $16.7 billion dollars and is expected to reach $45 billion in the next five years.

Cons: That many people online means that the competition is bound to be fierce; but the opposite holds true as well. That many people online means there should be enough market share to go around.

Bottom Line: An internet business is a great way to generate a second income or a primary money generating system that once set up is completely automated. However if you are starting out now be aware that you have millions of already established internet marketing businesses to compete with.

2. Do Your Research First

Before deciding on what your internet business is going to be make sure that there is a large enough target audience to make it worth your while. There’s no point marketing something that nobody is interested in.

Pros: Countless opportunities abound online and also there’re several websites such as digitalpoint.com which offer excellent free marketing research tools.

Cons: Excellent as a lot of these free tools are, they cannot compete with some fee-based tools as far as in-depth analytics go.

Bottom Line: Plenty of novice internet marketers doom themselves right from the get-go because they don’t bother doing any prior research which is tantamount to firing first before readying yourself, aiming then finally firing!

3. Getting Your Web Presence

The internet has come of age. A few years back getting a credible web presence usually translated into having to shell out exorbitant hosting fees. That has since changed!

These days you can get luxury-level, premium loaded web hosting for less than $4/month. Even better yet you can conduct an online business without ever having to pay web hosting fees. All you have to do is use a blog!

Pros: Starting an online business today need not cost you a single cent upfront!

Cons: Just starting out means that you’ve got your work cut out to distinguish your internet business from the rest of the crowd; a very big crowd!

Bottom Line: You really no longer have an excuse for not getting a web presence. The old oh-I-cannot-afford-hosting-fees excuse no longer cuts it! As previously mentioned it is now possible to conduct internet marketing without putting down a single cent. And as for not knowing HTML (web coding language)! That excuse too is dead and buried.; knowing html or other web coding language is a thing of the past, these days you can make do quite nicely without.

4. What Is The Fastest/Easiest Way To Make Money Online?

Hands down the cheapest, easiest and quickest way to make money online is through affiliate marketing.

And what is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is simply a partnership between an affiliate (you) and a merchant (the merchant being the owner of the product). Affiliate marketing may also be referred to as affiliate programs, referral programs and associate programs.

Here’s how affiliate marketing works–You (the affiliate) promote or advertise a product on your site that belongs to somebody else (the merchant).

Basically, the merchant supplies you with a variety of text links, banners or graphics embedded with your own affiliate code. You then strategically insert any number of those coded links or graphics onto your website (or blog) with the purpose of referring your visitors to the merchant’s site.

When one of your site’s visitors clicks on any one of those code-imbedded links they are transferred to the merchant’s site. If that visitor then purchases something from that merchant you get paid. It’s as simple as that.

Pros: You don’t have to spend a cent to be an affiliate marketer. The best affiliate programs furnish you with all the necessary tools to conduct a successful promotional campaign of their products. Best of all, there are more than enough well-established and trustworthy affiliate program directories from which you can choose almost any product to promote!

Cons: You need to make sure that the products that you promote actually achieve what the claim to do (which in some cases entails trying them out beforehand). Also you are going to be faced with the issue of being just another affiliate marketer promoting the same products as thousands of other internet marketers.

Bottom Line: Affiliate marketing is the cheapest way to start out. However bear in mind that the internet marketers who make the big bucks do so through selling their own products. So in essence you should promote other people’s stuff up until you’ve become internet marketing savvy enough to sell your own product, be it digital goods (downloadable stuff) or whatever.

5. Internet Traffic: The Pot Of Gold At The End Of Every Internet Marketing Rainbow

In the online world once you’ve got lots of internet traffic you’re made, without it, you’re dead! Internet traffic is the true engine that drives any successful internet business. Those websites or blogs that are raking it in do so for one reason and one reason alone; they get tons of online traffic!

So how do you get traffic? There’re a variety of ways to get traffic, some of them free and others not so.

A. Use Web 2.0 techniques: Web 2.0 is the newest phase or 2nd generation of web based services which include social networking sites such as myspace.com and youtube.com to name but a few. A well organized and interesting blog is a good platform with which to gain web 2.0 based internet traffic.

B. Write Articles: Cheap and highly effective method to attract quick relevant traffic to your website or blog. It does require a certain amount of effort on your part (in other words conveying useful information) to make sure that your article attracts a ton of visitors to your site. The best bit about article writing is that you have literally thousands of article directories where you can submit your articles to.

C. Posting In Forums: Most people trawl forums to find answers that resolve their problems. You can capitalize on this by checking out forums relevant to your market and posting replies to current or recent questions to which you know the answers. If you post a genuinely useful and helpful reply you could end up with several grateful customers.

How?

Well, it’s very probable those people whose problem you just solved will click on your signature link to see what further useful information they can get from your site. Most forums enable you to promote your site by allowing you to paste a link pointing to your site at the end of your posting (different forums have different guidelines so it’s good to read them up).

D. Pay-Per-Click Advertising of which perhaps the most famous (or infamous depending on your perspective) is Google Adwords. Paying to get internet traffic through advertising is what is commonly known as PPC or pay-per-click. At its most basic, pay per-click marketing involves you composing an ad and bidding for a relevant searched-for keyword. Your ad will then be listed on the relevant search engine index pages for that same keyword you bid.

E. Internet Traffic From The Search Engines: This is the best traffic to draw to your website because it is the most qualified and targeted type of online traffic. What do I mean when I say the most qualified type of internet traffic?

I am talking about people who actively typed in a search term/phrase (keyword) into any search engine online. Such a person is more likely to purchase, subscribe or do whatever you most desire your visitors to do when they get to your site.

Getting this kind of traffic requires search engine optimization (seo) of your website or blog.

Pros: There’re multiple avenues to draw internet traffic to your website/blog these days, all of which involve a certain amount of effort, some more so than others. A well written article costs you no more than the whirring of your brain and the tip tap of your fingers on the keyboard, yet the traffic generated from that one article could quite easily tanslate into big sales.

Cons: Online traffic is what everybody with a web presence desires, only problem is that it happens to be rather challenging to get a significant amount of it unless your website has been around for quite a while.

Bottom Line: Internet traffic is the lifeblood of any online business and if you intend to be an internet marketer then you cannot do without it.

6. Play Not Follow The Leader!

Masura Ibuka, a co-founder of Sony once said “You never succeed in technology, business or anything else by following others!” That quote is equally applicable today in the internet marketing arena as it was when he said it. If you insist on playing follow-the-leader, then by proxy you’ll always be playing catch-up which is not the best marketing strategy.

Pros: Being the leader in whatever marketing endeavor you pursue automatically makes your brand instantly recognizable to the public which translates into more profit because people will always think of you first for that particular niche market. After all don’t forget your ultimate internet marketing goal should be selling your own products.

Cons: Being in the forefront by its very nature means that you’re going to have to put in a little more time and effort at the beginning to attain that lead than if you were just joining the ranks of followers.

7. Avoid The Minefield Of Online Scams.

I’m sure you don’t need to be told that the internet is awash with scams. A good rule of thumb to abide by is: If it seems too good to be true then it is precisely that! Most people get scammed because they are looking for the easiest path to riches and hence ignore that little squeaky voice in their head that is telling them “there’s no such thing as an overnight success!”

Pros: A lot of internet marketers who had been operating smoothly behind a facade of respectability have since been exposed together with their scams. Still the onus is on you to keep your wits and common sense and not get duped!

Cons: It is easy to be swept off your senses by good copywriting and visions of all that money you’re apparently going to make overnight!

If you ever do start getting that giddy feeling ascribed to gonna-be-rich-overnight syndrome, remember what world-famous hairstylist Vidal Sassoon had to say about success: “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary!”
